Karolien Grosemans appointed as SEDEC rapporteur for Skills for the Future in Trnava

During the SEDEC external meeting in Trnava (Slovakia), Karolien Grosemans, member of the Flemish Parliament, was appointed rapporteur for the important Skills for the Future dossier. The file was placed on the Committee of the Regions’ agenda at the request of the incoming Irish Presidency, with a specific focus on how artificial intelligence (AI) and the growing need for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) profiles will reshape education across the European Union.

Grosemans reacted enthusiastically to her appointment: “I am very glad to have the opportunity to lead on this important file. The AI revolution is unfolding as we speak. It is crucial that all regions of the EU keep pace. That necessarily means adapting our education systems.”

As a former teacher and longstanding member of the Committee on Education in the Flemish Parliament, Grosemans hopes to bring this experience to the Committee of the Regions: “I have always had a strong interest in education. I know the field, with all its challenges and strengths. I am confident that my experience will serve me well in the drafting process.”

For Grosemans, “excellence” is the guiding principle for building tomorrow’s education systems. “If we want the EU to lead the AI revolution, we need the engineers and data experts of tomorrow. That is why excellence is key for me. Excellence, excellence, excellence – we must fully harness everyone’s talent.”

The opinion will be debated for the first time at the September SEDEC Commission meeting, followed by a plenary adoption in December.
