Declan McDonnell Welcomes EU Coastal Communities Strategy

Speaking during the July Plenary Session, Declan McDonnell (IE/EA) welcomed the new EU Coastal Communities Strategy, saying it puts people and places at the heart of EU policy while helping secure a sustainable future for coastal regions.

Highlighting the challenges facing Europe’s coastal communities, including climate change, demographic change and economic transition, he said the strategy recognises their vital role in the blue economy, food production and Europe’s maritime heritage.

Drawing on his experience of Galway, Declan Mc Donnell said coastal communities must remain vibrant places to live and work, protecting local traditions, jobs and ways of life. “Galway is a coastal city that reflects much of what this strategy aims to preserve – a strong local economy, a vibrant sense of community, and unique traditions and language. Our coastal towns and cities must remain attractive places to live, work and raise families,” he said. He also announced that the European Alliance Group will host a meeting in September on the future of Europe’s coastal areas. “Together, we can help ensure our coastal regions continue to thrive,” he added.

McDonnell said the strategy offers opportunities to strengthen coastal defences, improve infrastructure, protect marine habitats and support sustainable industries such as fishing, tourism and the marine economy.
