Cllr Kieran McCarthy welcomes the COR Bureau’s Mullingar declaration and said “Empower the Regions and the EU will be a success”

EU regional and local leaders adopted the Mullingar Declaration at a meeting of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) Bureau in the Mullingar on the 23rd September.

Leading politicians from across the European Union gathered to discuss how to strengthen communities under the theme “Thriving and sustainable communities – building a Europe that works for all territories.”   The meeting of the CoR’s External Bureau concluded with the adoption of the Mullingar Declaration, titled “A Future Worth Staying For”.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Irish Presidency, Minister of State for Community Development, Charities and Rural Transport, Jerry Buttimer TD, said:

“I am very familiar with the opportunities and challenges experienced by communities right across Ireland and beyond. This meeting is an excellent opportunity to come together and reflect on how we can empower our regions to deliver on the theme of ‘thriving and sustainable communities’.” EA Group member Cllr Kieran McCarthy of Cork City Council said that regions must be recognised in the delivery of EU policies, adding: “Empower the Regions and the EU will be a success.”
