EA Member and former rapporteur Kieran McCarthy Moderates High-Level Conference Marking 100 Years of Bauhaus

Marking the centenary of the Bauhaus Dessau, alongside the forward-looking vision of the New European Bauhaus, EA group member and former rapporteur on the New European Bauhaus, Kieran McCarthy moderated the high-level conference at the Committee of the Regions, “100 Years of Bauhaus: Local Leadership for a Just Transition”. This event brought together policymakers, local elected officials and practitioners from design, communication and heritage-based initiatives, to celebrate its legacy and showcase how the New Bauhaus, through multilevel leadership can drive sustainable and inclusive transformation.

The conference benefitted from the skilful moderation of McCarthy who guided discussions across disciplines and governance levels, facilitating the connection of the historical contribution of Bauhaus and the contemporary European ambitions for a fair and place-based green transition. It was understood throughout the conference that local regions are at the epicentre of the New European Bauhaus through mobilising communities, fostering bottom-up co-creation and engaging with environments to deliver a just, dependable transition rooted in people and place.

Reflecting on the significance of this milestone, McCarthy noted: “I am really taken by this topic, as it is utilising something pioneered 100 years ago and revitalising these principles to create new ideas, with specific focus on integration, sustainability and aesthetics- with cities and regions being the key actors in delivering this vision.”
