Magdalena Speaks on Europe’s Housing Crisis During July Plenary

During the July Plenary Session, EA member Magdalena Czarzyńska-Jachim spoke on the growing housing crisis affecting millions of Europeans, particularly young people, low- and middle-income households, older people and vulnerable groups.

She highlighted that rising housing costs, a lack of affordable homes and increasing market speculation are making secure, long-term housing increasingly inaccessible. Magda also warned that the rapid expansion of short-term tourist rentals is reducing the supply of homes for local residents and driving up property prices and rents, while illegal rentals further undermine effective housing regulation.

She called for stronger action to protect access to affordable housing and ensure that homes serve communities rather than speculation.

“A secure home is the foundation for an independent life,” Magdalena said, noting that without adequate housing, people face significant obstacles to finding work, accessing education and healthcare, and building stable family lives.
